The Shatter and Sew technique explodes your image!

I just took a class where I learned how to create a quilt block with the Shatter and Sew technique. Sometimes it is also called a Fractured Image. We used the book Shatter and Sew by Connie Mantini and Patricia Faust.

The basic steps are: cut 4 exact repeats of an image from your fabric, cut each image into 2" squares, lay them out in a specific order on a grid and then sew all the 2" squares together.

The teacher of this class had already created the grid on large paper for us and labeled each square, so we knew exactly where to lay each 2" square. She told us that if we had to create our own grid in class, it would have taken at least an extra hour. We were all very thankful she had done that ahead of time, especially when we were allowed to keep the grid that we used!

It is recommended to use a large print for the Shatter and Sew technique. Several of us used a fabric that had cars on it. My mom used a cat design. There was also a floral border design and an all over soccer ball with flags of different countries.

It is easy to do, but you do need to be precise when cutting and laying out the pieces. The lady with the soccer ball design got her pieces a little mixed up and had to spend some time figuring which way they were supposed to go. We all completed our block within the 3 hour class and they looked very cool!

I have several different car related fabrics, so I've made three fractured blocks and then combined them into one quilt. Here's the finished quilt.
