Quilting templates help you cut accurate pieces for your quilts.

When you need to cut pieces for your quilt design, quilting templates help you cut accurate pieces. Accurate pieces make it easier for you to put your block together accurately and have all blocks turn out the same size. Very important when you try to sew them together!

Templates can be made from paper, cardboard, plastic or even metal (although I haven't seen any metal ones myself).

When you are on a budget, you can make your own templates from paper or cardboard. The sturdier the better if you will be using them alot. If it is only for one or two times, then paper should work fine. I like to include the 1/" seam allowance with my template, that way I can cut exactly what size/shape the template is and not forget to add it.

Plastic templates can also be made at home, with sheets of plastic. If the plastic sheet is not too thick, you can cut the template with scissors. Thicker plastic would require a template cutter that looks kind of like a glue gun, but melts the plastic instead of cutting it.

There are many different sizes and shapes of templates that are available to buy. You can get sets of the same shape with different sizes or sets of different shapes that make a specific block pattern.
