Quilt Stencils create the design for quilting on your quilt.
These quilting stencils are plastic sheets that have quilting designs precut into them. The design could be a stipple (all-over) pattern, a cable for feathers for borders and sashing, or a design that fits in a block. The designs are almost limitless.
All you do is lay the stencil on top of your quilt sandwich and mark the design. You will need to do this several times by moving the stencil to a new spot, lining it up with your previous markings and marking in the new spot. When you have marked the whole area you wish to quilt with the pattern, you're ready to quilt (by hand or machine).
Sten Source is one company that has a great selection of stencils. There are Sten Source stencils for borders, all over patterns and specific designs (anything from stars and feathers to chickens and whales).
Using a Pounce Pad is a quick way to mark your quilt with a stencil. It's kind of like a sponge filled with ground up chalk. You pat the Pounce Pad on your stencil and the loose chalk goes through it onto your quilt.
Another way of marking your quilt design is not to mark it at all. Designs on paper make it easy to sew by following the lines. When you're done, you rip off the paper and reveal the quilting underneath. I think that's the fun part!
Electric Quilt quilting designs are collections of patterns on cd that you can print out from your printer. You can choose the design and then tell the program what size you need it to be. It is a great way to coordinate your designs even when the available space is all different sizes.
Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs makes sets of patterns that are printed on heavy paper. You trace them and then quilt through them by following the lines. Each boxed set comes with several designs that have coordinated patterns for blocks, borders and corners. I have all 4 sets and use them frequently.
Quilting Made Easy makes designs printed on a roll of paper that you just pin to your quilt and then sew right through, following the printed design. When you're done, you just rip off the paper and your design is done. Very easy!
