Using a quilt hanger is one way to display your quilt properly and enjoy it longer.
My favorite way to show off a quilt is to hang it on a wooden quilt hanger that has a shelf attached above it. I can add other decorative items on the shelf to make a nice scene.

The important things to remember are: display your quilt in an area with low light, good ventilation and comfortable humidity. Light (sunlight or artificial light) can cause the colors in your quilt to fade and the damage is irreversible.
Laying your quilt on a bed, as intended, will distribute the weight evenly over the whole quilt. You can also layer several quilts on a bed if you need to. Then, spread a sheet over the top if it won't be viewed for a while to protect it from light, dust, etc. In my house, everything needs to be protected from our cats!
You could also fold the quilt over a:
- free standing rack
- wall mounted shelf with a rod
- ladder
- back of a chair
If possible, pad the folds with acid-free tissue paper and regularly refold it to prevent permanent creases.
To hang a quilt on a wall, sew a
hanging sleeve
along the top edge. Mount a quilt hanger on the wall. Then run the rod through the sleeve and attach it back onto the hanger. Most of the ones I have used are made of wood. But I have seen some really cute wire hangers for smaller sizes too. You could also hang a rod from the ceiling or on brackets like those used for curtains.
Never use nails, staples or pins to hold up a quilt. They make holes that will enlarge over time from the weight of the quilt.
By displaying your quilt properly, you will help preserve it while you are enjoying it!
