A Memory Quilt is a great way to capture something or someone important in your life.
One Memory Quilt will look completely different from another because each person's memories are different. Even if two sisters made a quilt about the same thing, they would look different. Colors would differ and the pattern would differ because their memories of the event would differ.
Vintage and antique quilts could fall in this category if the maker chose the design because it reminded her of something in her life. Even utility quilts could be one because they are usually made up of scraps of fabric used for other things.
I enjoy making this type of quilts for 2 reasons: 1) it's fun to relive what you are trying to capture in fabric and 2) the hunt for the perfect fabric and/or pattern to use.
The first memory quilt I made was a wedding gift for my sister. It has pieced quilt squares with names that have meaning to my sister and her new husband, like Bride's Bouquet, Wedding Ring, Building Blocks (my sister's a teacher), Monkey Wrench (her husband is a mechanic), etc. It also has photos of them growing up using light sensitive fabric. This was done in 1992 before the printable fabric of today. I also made a similar wedding quilt for my step-daughter in 2002, using printable fabric called
Printed Treasures
for some squares. The printable fabrics are so easy to use and can be used in many ways in a quilt.
Another type that is popular is a quilt made out of favorite t-shirts. The picture or logo portion of the t-shirt is cut out and usually attached to a backing to keep it from stretching. Then the squares are sewn together just as traditional blocks. Kids really like these because they can keep shirts that they've outgrown and be reminded of so many different things!
