Adding quilted home decor items provides a soft touch and protection to your hard surfaces.
Quilted home decor items include items such as placemats, table runners, table toppers and mantle scarves. They provide protection for your hard surfaces from scratches, spills and water rings. They also add a lot of personality to your space.
We all have different sets of placemats and tablecloths that we use for different occasions. But sometimes you just can't find exactly what you are looking for in the stores. Quilted placemats and table runners can be made in any color, pattern and design that you can envision. Patterns are available at any fabric or quilt store, too.
Table toppers are usually made to fit the top of a table and not hang over the sides. You can also put one on top of a coordinating tablecloth for a layered look.
Mantle scarves are made so that the design part hangs over the front of the mantle. Patterns for quilted versions have come out fairly recently and are a great way to add a unique look to your fireplace area. They are easily changed when the mood strikes, since they are held in place by the items you already have on your mantle.

This table runner was made from left over blocks from my first Stack-N-Whack quilt that I made in a class. I couldn't find any fabric that I really liked, so settled for this. It's definitely not my normal bright color palette, but I think this runner and the original quilt turned out beautifully. - Tammy, Wilton Center, IL, USA (Quilt ID 1069)
This table topper was made from left over blocks from a Stack-N-Whack quilt I made. The fabrics are from the Wintergraphix line by Mark Lipinski. It measures about 26" square. - Tammy, Wilton Center, IL, USA (Quilt ID 1068)
For my friend's 70th birthday, I made this tablerunner. I had seen the pattern and thought it would be perfect for her. I chose colors that she liked and gave it to her at her surprise birthday party. - Joanne, Peotone, IL, USA
This is one of a set of 12 table runners I made for a friend. This is obviously for St. Patrick's Day in March. The leprechaun has a different color green for each item of clothing and the pot of gold has the coins quilted into it. - Joanne, Peotone, IL, USA
This is one of a set of 12 table runners I made for a friend. The pool floats are for the month of August. I had a collection of polka dot fabrics and used a different one for each section. - Joanne, Peotone, IL, USA
This is one of a set of 12 table runners I made for a friend. The scarecrow is for the month of September. I made a boy scarecrow and a girl scarecrow to represent my friend and her husband. The background fabric is ears of corn and the backing and binding is a cow fabric. - Joanne, Peotone, IL, USA
This table runner with bunnies is one of 12 runners I made a gifts for my friend. I made one for each month. This is for Easter/April, of course. I had the bunnies completed from a project I started many years ago, but never finished. So I incorporated them into the table runner. - Joanne, Peotone, IL, USA
This is one of a set of placemats I made for use during the fall season. They don't get too much use, because if I leave them out on my table, my cats will sleep on them and get them all furry. I used a placemat pattern from the book Block Magic. You can choose whatever big block for the main part and then add the flying geese blocks in coordinating colors. - Tammy, Wilton Center, IL, USA
