Design a Sewing Space for Yourself

If you sew, you should design a sewing space for yourself. It can be very small, like in a closet or corner of a room. Or it could be a whole room or building of its own.

I've seen spaces from very small to whole buildings separate from the house. Of course, it all depends on available space and budget. But the bare minimum is really just a table for your sewing machine to sit on and a container for your supplies.

The next step up is would be a cabinet that opens up to give you plenty of storage and work space, but then closes up when not in use. I've also seen sewing spaces built into closets. This is a great use for an extra closet (if you have one).

Taking over space from a room or even a whole room allows you to leave projects out and available for when you have even a few minutes to sew. My mom stores her supplies in a spare bedroom, but sews and cuts at her dining room table. Since she lives alone, this is not a problem. There is room to eat, read and sew!

Whatever kind of space you have, there is a way to make it work for you.

Share your sewing room with us!

Whatever you call it - sewing room, sewing studio, sewing space - it's the place where all your creative juices come out. Mine is the smallest bedroom in the house and has been my sewing room since we moved in, way before our kids arrived. I did save the bigger bedrooms for them.

Share your organization tips too. We could all use new ideas to help us keep our space neat and tidy. I know I sure could!

My space is a small spare bedroom, about 10' by 10'. I have a hardwood floor to make it easy to sweep up threads, scraps and pins that end up on the floor....
