Drunkard's Path Made Easy with Crazy Curves Templates
Drunkard's path is a block pattern that consists of a quarter circle and a background piece. Sewing curves is one of the more difficult seams to do because of the stretch of each piece of fabric along the curved edge. Elisa Wilson's Crazy Curves book and template set make it very easy to sew now. You can find Elisa's Backporch 7" Crazy Curves templates are available in many places. You can also combine the 7" blocks with 3.5" blocks made from Elisa's Backporch 3.5" Crazy Curves templates to create an endless variety of patterns. My mom and I took a class a couple years ago to learn her technique. We both finished a lap size quilt from that class,
mine with cat fabrics
and
Mom's from flamingo fabrics
. I've gone on and make a
second one
as a wedding gift and am now working on
halloween themed blocks
for a swap I've joined. The quarter circles in each block are white and represent ghost heads peeking out of the corner of a window. I've found Elisa's templates to be very easy to use with a rotary cutter. You can stack your fabrics and cut up to 4 sets at a time. Cutting goes quickly and so does sewing the 2 pieces of the blocks together. When choosing your fabrics, I recommend selecting high contrast fabrics. Light circles and dark backgrounds or vice versa look best for a "scrappy" quilt look. The second quilt I made is strictly red and white, and it's a very bold quilt! The hardest part is deciding how to lay out your blocks. Elisa Wilson's Crazy Curves Continues book gives many more examples to inspire you.
