Basket quilts honor a very important tool.

Why are basket quilts so popular? Baskets have been an important part of everyday life for centuries. It's no surprise that they are also a popular quilt pattern. Baskets can be appliqued onto a quilt block or be part of a pieced block.

Early quilts had appliqued baskets on solid backgrounds to allow the quilting to be the focus. Baltimore Album quilts are often made with appliqued baskets containing flowers or fruit, even birds.

Pieced baskets can be as simple as a triangle piece for the basket. More intricate pieced designs include a base for the basket and pieced or appliqued handles. The history of the basket quilt pattern is very interesting. Read more here. Baskets are still an important item in many homes, for decoration and use.
